Golf greenkeeper

Caring for the overall appearance of a golf course, maintaining a good quality playing surface and ensuring a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers.

Candidates will usually have at least 5 GCSEs at grades A to D (or equivalent), including maths, English and a science.

What apprentices will learn
  • preparing the golf course for play
  • preparing and using specialist equipment to maintain and renovate turf surfaces
  • applying turf treatments and controlling weeds, fungal diseases, pests and turf disorders
  • maintaining and renovating bunkers
  • maintaining drainage and irrigation systems
  • how to identify plants and trees
  • soil and plant biology
  • basic computer skills
Qualifications

Before taking their end-point assessment, apprentices must:

  • achieve level 1 English and maths (equivalent to GCSEs at grades D to G)
  • take the test for level 2 English and maths (equivalent to GCSEs at grades A* to C)
Professional registration

At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA).

At the end of the apprenticeship, successful apprentices will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become an accredited greenkeeper.
